Multivitamins during Pregnancy

Is it necessary for pregnant women to take specific multivitamins before and during pregnancy?

Of course it is, because these supplements contain several elements and vitamins which is difficult to get from food alone, even if you follow almost an ideal diet. That's why it is important to start these supplements from the time that you plan to get pregnant because a woman's status of health and nutrition is highly important before, after and during pregnancy.

During your pregnancy what are the important supplements?

Folic acid:

Folic acid is one of the most important supplements before and during pregnancy, typically supplements are given in a dose of 400 microgram as a minimum plus you can get it from food that is rich in folic acid like green leaves and legumes, Folic acid reduces the risk of fetus spine deformities for about 50-70%, such as cleft palate, and heart deformities. And regarding folic acid importance to mother's health, it reduces the risk of her getting preeclampsia. That’s why women who intend to get pregnant are advised to take folic acid ever day, and to continue taking it during the first trimester of her pregnanc

Iron:

Even before you're pregnant, your body needs iron for several reasons, but during pregnancy you need a lot more of this crucial mineral. Here's why:

  • The amount of blood in your body increases during pregnancy until you have almost 40-50 percent more blood than usual, so you need more iron to make more healthy red blood cell.
  • Iron is essential to support mothers and fetus immunity.
  • Iron is important for the fetus health as it helps in oxygen and nutrients delivery especially in the first trimester.
  • Iron-deficiency anemia in pregnant women can lead to several circumstances such as: premature birth, low birth weight.

Pregnant female must be aware of iron deficiency symptoms, like fatigue, weakness, pale skin, etc. Pregnant females are advised to measure iron levels early in pregnancy and periodically thereafter to ensure optimum doses and duration of iron supplementation during pregnancy, Plus it is recommended to ensure an iron rich diet like green leaves, legumes and meat.

Calcium:

When you're pregnant, you're developing baby needs calcium to build strong bones and teeth, if you don't get enough calcium in your diet when you're pregnant, your baby will take his needs of calcium from your bones, which may cause you low bone mass later on. Also calcium helps in protecting the mother form getting preeclampsia.

 

By eating a healthy, balanced diet you're more likely to get the nutrients you need. But you will need more of the essential nutrients (especially calcium, iron, and folic acid) than you did before; but as we mentioned earlier most women don’t take enough amount of essential vitamins and minerals from their diet, that’s why your health care provider will prescribe you prenatal vitamins starting from the time that you intend to get pregnant; to be sure both you and your growing baby are getting enough of most vitamins and minerals.
